New Hampshire State Hospital in Haunted New Hampshire

Haunted New Hampshire State Hospital

History
Built in 1842, this building served as a mental institution with a female ward and male ward. The building eventually expanded to have dorms for patients to make them feel more at home. The hospital continued to expand over the years to include housing for staff, administration, and surgical rooms. A building specifically for the elderly was added in the 1950’s. There is a graveyard that was attached to the hospital that can still be found nearby. It was used for families who did not want to bother with funeral arrangements. The graveyard has since been kept isolated from visitors for many years. For many years, this hospital was the only caretaker for the state. Eventually, the hospital closed in 1989. All of its services were transferred to a new hospital. Some of the buildings were turned into state offices, while others were left completely abandoned.

Hauntings
People who have visited the abandoned building have reported hearing disembodied screams and footsteps. Others have seen objects, such as hospital papers and files, get pushed off of tables without anyone actually touching them. Fluctuations in temperature and cold spots have also been reported. Sometimes, the elevators will start working again on their own. Many visitors claim they felt as if they were being constantly watched and that they were not alone. Some apparitions of former patients have been found wandering the halls of the abandoned buildings. However, it is more commonly reported to hear weird noises and screams than to see the spirits themselves. Employees in the buildings that have been repurposed have experienced some paranormal activity as well, such as seeing objects get pushed off of their desks on their own. Allegedly, people are still trying to research more of the paranormal phenomenon in the hospitals’ buildings.

Stay curious, but always stay within the bounds of the law and show consideration for the spiritual and historical significance of haunted places.
