History of the Alton Town Hall
Alton is a quaint New England town located right on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Home to year-round residents as well as summer vacationers, Alton is a historic town that seems friendly and open at first glance. Founded in 1796, the town is full of old buildings and history, like the rest of the state. The current town hall building, built in 1896, still functions as the town hall and is beautifully maintained. The brick facade and clock tower will take you back in time.

Is Alton Town Hall Haunted?
New Hampshire seems to be one of the most haunted states, with ghosts reported in buildings, cemeteries, restaurants, museums, hospitals, castles–you name it. If you are heading out on your road trip to New Hampshire haunted places, don’t forget Alton Town Hall. Many have reported hearing strange footsteps in the building, even when it is closed for business and completely empty. Some have observed doors opening and closing on their own, and hearing voices floating down the halls even late into the night. Perhaps the most chilling repot is that of furniture moving on its own. One late night a person heard what they thought was furniture being moved upstairs. Sure that this was just some trick of the night, the person went up to investigate. Someone had taken the chairs out of the courtroom and arranged them in the hallway, in a single file line. No one else was in the building at the time. Keep in mind that Alton Town Hall is still in use as a town hall, so if you are heading out for the NH ghost tour, don’t disturb business for ghost-hunting. That being said, you won’t want to miss this stop at a 100-year-old haunted courthouse.

Stay curious, but always stay within the bounds of the law and show consideration for the spiritual and historical significance of haunted places.
