During its operation, the asylum functioned as a self-sustainable facility, with its own livestock, agricultural resources, greenhouses, and heating plant. The patients engaged in various labor activities, which were seen as therapeutic for their well-being. Eventually, the controversy surrounding electroshock therapy and lobotomies led to the closure of the Ohio asylum.

The property encompasses three graveyards where over 2,000 patients, who were laid to rest between 1874 and 1972, were buried.
