Exploring the Shadows of Old Licking Jail
Welcome to a journey through one of Ohio’s most haunted sites—the Old Licking Jail. This formidable structure, with its towering stone walls and iron-bound gates, stands as a monument to its eerie past. Known for its chilling ambiance and ghostly stories, this jail is not for the faint of heart. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the tales of nocturnal screams and inexplicable cold drafts through its corridors are enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine.

A Dark History: The Old Licking Jail
Built between 1888 and 1889 in Newark, Ohio, the Old Licking Jail was originally designed by architect J.W. Yost to serve dual purposes: a residence for the sheriff and a detention facility for up to 68 inmates. Its history is marked by tales of tragedy and rebellion, including the deadly “Rebellion of 1894” which claimed the life of Sheriff William E. Jones.
Decommissioned in 1987, the jail sat abandoned until it was purchased by the Licking County Governmental Preservation Society in 2014. It now functions as a historical site, offering tours that delve into both its architectural beauty and haunted reputation.

The Spirits That Linger
The Old Licking Jail is said to be haunted by the spirits of its past residents. Paranormal enthusiasts and skeptics alike have reported encounters with the supernatural here—ranging from eerie whispers to full spectral apparitions. One of the most well-known spirits is that of Carl Etherington, a detective whose life met a tragic end within these walls.
Today, the jail is a popular destination for those fascinated by the paranormal, contributing significantly to local tourism and historical education.
