The History of South Bass Island Lighthouse
Sure, I’d be glad to tell you about the South Bass Island Lighthouse. It’s located at the southern end of South Bass Island in Ohio, within the village of Put-in-Bay.
The lighthouse construction was completed in 1897 with $8,600 allocated by Congress for its construction. It was designed in Queen Anne style, quite an unusual style for a lighthouse, crafted from a blend of red brick and pink sandstone. Designed to guide vessels through the somewhat risky waters of Lake Erie, it was strategically placed to cover a wide expanse.
The lighthouse was operated by the U.S. Lighthouse Service until 1939, when the U.S. Coast Guard took over. They continued to use the lighthouse to guide vessels until 1962. It has a height of 60 feet and initially had a flashing white light to aid ships.
As for its keepers, Harry H. Riley was the first one who served for approximately two decades. The last was Charles B. Duggan who served for about ten years.
Eventually, the lighthouse was deemed unnecessary due to advancing technology, and it was deactivated and replaced by an automated light on a nearby pier.
In 1967, The Ohio State University found interest in the building and was given ownership of it. It was later used for accommodating scientific studies, meetings, and lodging for researchers studying at the F.T. Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island.
The South Bass Island Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. After some restoration and preservation work, the lighthouse and its grounds were opened to the public for tours in 2007, offering visitors a chance to explore this historic landmark and enjoy the panoramic view of Lake Erie.
Is it really haunted at South Bass Island Lighthouse?
