Mount Marty College in Haunted South Dakota

Haunted Mount Marty College

Mount Marty College lies on an 80-acre campus in the town of Yankton. The school came about when the first Catholic Bishop, Martin Mary, moved to the area. He invited Benedictine Sisters to come and be in charge of religious services. The Sisters started up a junior all-girls college in 1936. It wasn’t until 1969 that male students were allowed to join the body. However, not everything went as planned, and the campus has been the home to many unexpected, tragic deaths. It started during construction when one of the workers fell from a building platform to his death. In the Corbey Residence Hall, a female student disappeared one day, never to be seen again. There have also been several cases of males committing suicide on campus, either by hanging themselves or shooting themselves. One of these hangings took place in the Dakota Hall when a dorm mother caught a boy sharing one of her girl’s rooms. The boy was distraught and feared he would be expelled. Instead of taking this punishment, he ended his life.

Many of the people who died on the campus are said to still be there as entities, with different sections of the campus experiencing different paranormal phenomena. As for the missing girl, the Corbey Hall students often report seeing a ghostly girl riding up and down the elevators, with her presence being felt on whichever floor it stops on. In the Dakota Hall, strange moaning can be heard from a haunting male apparition. Deaths also occurred within some of the fraternity houses, Lambda Chi Alpha and Delta Tau Delta. The Lambda Chi fraternity house is haunted by a boy who hung himself after thinking he had failed his pre-medical exams, however, little did he know, he hadn’t. Delta Tau Delta is haunted by a dead fraternity brother, Gerry, who still sees himself as ‘one of the boys’. He often plays with the electrics, and turns on the TV or DVD player to chill out. He also accompanies current fraternity brothers in the basement as they relax and listen to music.

Stay curious, but always stay within the bounds of the law and show consideration for the spiritual and historical significance of haunted places.
