Bullock Hotel, tucked away in the little town of Deadwood, South Dakota, has endured the test of time to become the city’s oldest hotel. Local sheriff Seth Bullock and his business partner Sol Star are said to have erected the historic hotel between 1894 and 1896. The Hotel Bullock was built on the site of a previous warehouse that burned down in a severe fire in 1894. The three-story edifice, designed in Victorian style, had a big hotel lobby, a casino, a restaurant, and 63 elegant rooms with brass beds and wood furnishings. With its elegant architecture, the Bullock Hotel immediately established itself as the go-to meeting and lodging site for all visitors coming to Deadwood. Captain Seth Bullock was devoted to his hotel and died of cancer in room 211 on September 23, 1919. As a result, it’s no surprise that guests will find him still haunting the hotel to this day.
With such a checkered past, it’s no wonder that the Bullock is plagued by the supernatural, namely the ghost of its original owner, who died in 1919. After all, visitors report that Seth Bullocks, the hotel’s original owner, is said to haunt the hotel to this very day. However, the most prevalent paranormal event at the motel is the ghost of a sheriff. After all, legend claims that Deadwood’s first sheriff died in room 211 of the hotel on September 23, 1919. Guests have also claimed unexplainable occurrences in the hotel’s second and third-floor rooms. Alarm clocks, for example, frequently go off by themselves, and televisions will turn on even when unplugged. Staff have also noticed that ancient clocks will chime on their own, even if they haven’t worked in years.
