Easton’s Castle is a historic lodging site in Brown County, South Dakota. Easton’s Castle was built back in 1889 by a farmer by the name of C.A. Bliss. However, it gained its name of Easton’s Castle when a foreclosure happened, granting the property to C.F Easton. The home was kept in the Easton family for a long time, and after his family died, Russell Easton lived alone in the castle until 1965. He secluded himself inside and became a hermit, and not much else has been heard of from Russell Easton. Ever since then, the home has been preserved by Dr. Sam Holman, who is a veterinarian that bought Easton’s Castle in 1967. Even now you can visit and stay in the castle. Or you can visit the campground next to it and try to see if you can find some spooky sights.
The current homeowners don’t believe in the ghost tales, however, that doesn’t stop the tales from circulating. It is believed several spirits reside inside the castle. One of which is Russell Easton, another is the family housekeeper, and the last is a mystery phantom. Russell Easton was a son of the Easton family, and it is said he roams the property to this day, hiding away inside. There have been no sightings of him, but because of the way he secluded himself inside the house for years, many believe him to be there. The family housekeeper was the niece of the author of The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum. Her name was Leslie Gage, and she is believed to haunt the third floor. Lastly, the mystery phantom is a rumor. One guest reported that a mysterious phantom chased them through the halls. And that’s not all: the phantom had a knife. Whether this story is true or not is unconfirmed.
