The History of Southern Utah University

Southern Utah University, also called SUU, has an intriguing history. It was established in 1897, originally as the Branch Normal School, an extension of the University of Utah. The school was created to train teachers and offer higher education opportunities in the rural areas of the state. Within a few years, it had 70 students and a faculty of three.

The university underwent a series of transitions and shifts in focus. In 1913, it became the Branch Agricultural College as part of the national movement toward agricultural and vocational emphasis in public education. In 1951, the school was transferred from the University of Utah to the direction of Utah State Agricultural College in Logan and was renamed the College of Southern Utah.

In 1969, it was transformed into Southern Utah State College to reflect the increasing diverse curriculum and programs it was offering. It wasn’t until 1991 that the Utah State Legislature rechristened the institution as Southern Utah University, a name it retains today.

1. Old Main Building: A spirit known as the “Phantom of Old Main” is perhaps the most famous ghost said to haunt Southern Utah University. Wrapping Up

Southern Utah University, nestled in Cedar City, has a rich and varied history stretching back to its founding in 1897. Part of this history is an intriguing tapestry of alleged hauntings and supernatural occurrences that account for a significant part of its folklore.

For instance, the Old Main building, the university’s oldest standing facility, is believed to be frequented by the spirit of a janitor who met an untimely death at the premises. Whispers of disappearing objects, strange noises, and footsteps, as well as the feeling of being watched, are commonly reported experiences in this place.

Another infamous spot is the auditorium of Adams Theatre. Patrons and performers often narrate tales of ghostly figures, inexplicable chilly areas, and props that seem to move of their own accord. A common narrative suggests that a past stage manager, who supposedly loved the Theatre so much, is making nocturnal visits even in his afterlife.

The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery has its share of eerie incidents as well. Canvases that mysteriously fall off, lights flickering inexplicably, and doors that open and close on their own seem to suggest a spectral art lover making their presence known.
