The History of Ceely Rose House

The Ceely Rose House is a historic landmark located at Malabar Farm State Park in Lucas, Ohio, United States. The house was built in 1896 and is famous, or some would say infamous, due to the tragedy that happened within its walls. It was the home of the Rose family, which consisted of Rebecca Rose, her husband George, and their daughter, Ceely.

The story associated with the house revolves around the only child of the Rose family, Ceely, who was reported to have some mental impairment. She was desperately in love with a neighbor boy, Guy Berry. However, when Ceely found out that Guy did not feel the same way, and in fact, was planning to marry another woman, Ceely became upset and violent.

In a tragic turn of events, in the summer of 1896, Ceely Rose poisoned her entire family by mixing rat poison in the cottage cheese she served them. She claimed she only wanted to make them sick so that Guy Berry wouldn’t come around the house anymore due to their illness. Unfortunately, her parents and her brother didn’t survive the poison.

Ceely Rose House, located within the historical Malabar Farm State Park in Lucas, Ohio, is famous for a ghost story tied to its former occupant, Ceely Rose.

Ceely Rose, an intellectually challenged girl, lived here in the late 19th century. She had unrequited love for a neighbouring boy, and when he did not return her affection, she was reported to have poisoned her entire family in an effort to win his love. It’s said she mistook rat poison for love potion and killed her mother, father, and brother in the process. She was then placed in a mental institution where she died 47 years later, reportedly of sadness and remorse.

Now, stories abound that Ceely’s spirit supposedly haunts her old home. It even sparked investigation by numerous paranormal investigators. Some incidents that make people believe in the haunting include:

Wrapping Up

The Ceely Rose House stands tall amidst the other structures at Ohio‘s Malabar Farm State Park. Originally owned by the Rose family, the house has become one of the most notorious spots for ghost hunts due to its chilling history.

In the late 19th century, the Roses lived there peacefully until a tragic event marked the house as haunted. In 1896, Ceely Rose, their only daughter, fell in love with a local boy named Guy Berry. When she presumed he was in love with another woman, blinded by jealousy, she bought arsenic, claiming it was rat poison. She mixed the poison into the family’s cottage cheese at breakfast. Unbeknownst to her, not only Guy was supposed to consume the cheese but her entire family as well.

Ceely’s mother was the first one to suffer and passed away instantly. Ceely’s father fell ill but managed to survive for a few more weeks. Meanwhile, Ceely’s brother, Walter, withstood the bitterness a bit longer. However, within two months, everyone except Ceely in the Rose family had passed away. Later investigations led authorities to identify Ceely as the killer.

Due to her perceived mental incapacity, Ceely was institutionalized for the rest of her life rather than being imprisoned. She passed away in 1934 in the Lima State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

These tragic events have left a haunting effect on the house. Today, visitors and staff report strange occurrences, such as hearing odd noises, seeing shadowy figures, and experiencing an eerie feeling of being watched. Ceely’s spirit is said to roam the house and its surroundings, sometimes appearing in Victorian clothing, inquiring about her lost love, Guy Berry. Consequently, the Ceely Rose House has become a famous spot for paranormal investigations. The tragic tale of love and family loss continues to cast a dark shadow over this historic home.
