History
Part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, the Benson Hotel is the seventh largest hotel in Portland, with 287 rooms. Originally known as the New Oregon Hotel, the hotel was renamed after a notable businessman, Simon Benson, and is known as one of the finest hotels in Portland. The Benson Hotel opened in 1913 as an annex to the Oregon Hotel. In 1959, the Oregon Hotel was demolished and the Benson was expanded. In 1986, the hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Benson Hotel was part of Westin Hotels until 2021, when the hotel was rebranded as part of Hilton. This luxury hotel was frequented by celebrities, CEOs, and even U.S. presidents. Unfortunately, the Benson did have its share of death when drummer Mitch Mitchell died in his hotel room in 2008.
Hauntings
The most famous ghost at the Benson Hotel is actually the former owner, Simon Benson. He is often seen on the staircase wearing a formal suit. His apparition has also been spotted in the common area. He often scowls at guests who are drinking, as he did not approve of alcohol in his hotel when he was alive. He is even known to knock over drinks too. Other ghosts include a lady in a fancy blue dress who has often been seen in the reflection of the mirror in the lobby or in bathroom mirrors, a helpful porter who helped carry bags for guests only to vanish in front of their eyes, a lady wearing white spotted at the end of hallways, and a playful young boy that seemed to vanish after playing with guests. Despite the high number of ghosts in the hotel, none appear to be malicious and there are no reports of attacks. Some of the spirits appear quite friendly and other than being surprised by their appearance, most guests have not felt attacked or fearful in the Benson Hotel.
