Robert the Doll is no ordinary plaything. With his ability to move, change expressions, and even engage in conversations, this unique doll has captivated the imagination of those who have encountered him. Sewn together in the early 1900s and named after his owner, Robert Eugene Otto, the doll has a sinister reputation that extends far beyond its appearance. From mysterious incidents in the family home to unsettling encounters experienced by neighbors and visitors, the story of Robert the Doll is steeped in paranormal activity and hauntings. Let us delve into the history of this eerie doll and explore the alleged hauntings and curses associated with him.

The History of Robert the Doll

Robert the Doll was created by a servant or slave for a young boy named Robert Eugene Otto, also known as Gene. The doll was dressed in a sailor suit and initially had a jester-like face. Gene formed an inseparable bond with the doll, going so far as to name it after himself. However, as time went on, strange occurrences began to surround the doll.

One night, Gene’s mother was awakened by his screams for help. When she entered his room, she found Gene curled up in fear under the blankets, while furniture was in disarray as if it had been thrown around the room. At the foot of the bed sat Robert the Doll, wearing a chilling smile. What startled Gene’s mother even more was that she heard her son conversing with the doll, but the voice she heard was not Gene’s. This incident raised suspicions about the true nature of the doll.

Despite the unsettling events, Gene kept Robert by his side throughout his adulthood. After Gene’s parents passed away, he inherited their grand home and worked as an artist. However, Gene’s wife, Anne, felt a deep unease around the doll and suggested that it be locked away in the attic. Gene complied with her request, but the doll’s presence seemed to extend beyond its confinement.

Neighbors and school children walking by the house would report seeing Robert the Doll moving from window to window. Despite Gene’s efforts to keep him locked away, the doll would mysteriously appear in different parts of the house. Some even claimed that Anne succumbed to insanity, and Gene himself died with Robert by his side.

Following Gene’s death, new owners moved into the house, and their 10-year-old daughter discovered Robert the Doll in the attic. To her delight, she made the same claims about the doll as Gene did. Eventually, the doll found its current home at the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West, where it is displayed in a locked glass case.

Is Robert the Doll Cursed?

Visitors and staff members at the Fort East Martello Museum have reported several eerie experiences related to Robert the Doll. One of the most notable phenomena is the alleged change in the doll’s facial expressions. Many claim that Robert’s smile transforms into a more menacing or sinister expression when observed for an extended period.

Electronic devices, such as cell phones and cameras, are said to malfunction or become inoperable in the presence of the doll. This phenomenon has been reported by numerous visitors, further adding to the belief that supernatural forces surround Robert.

These letters often express a desire for forgiveness and the removal of any hex or curse associated with the doll. Many have speculated that Robert was cursed with black magic or voodoo as a result of mistreatment during the time he spent with Gene’s parents and their servant or slave.

While the alleged curse remains, some have noticed changes in the doll over time. There are claims that Robert’s soul and even his hair color have been diminishing. This has led to speculation about the possible breaking of the curse and the eventual fate of the doll.
