The History of Fort Pickens
Fort Pickens, named after American Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens, is a pentagonal-shaped fort located on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island in Pensacola, Florida. It is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
Construction of Fort Pickens began in 1829, with its design aimed at guarding Pensacola Bay. It was one of four southern forts that never fell to Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In January 1861, just before the outbreak of the Civil War, Lieutenant Adam Slemmer, who was in charge of 50 men, decided to move his command from the mainland Barrancas Barracks to Fort Pickens to better defend his position. At the start of the war, Florida had seceded, but Fort Pickens remained in Union hands throughout the conflict.
