The History of the Bellamy Bridge

The story of Bellamy Bridge begins with the love affair between Elizabeth Jane Croom Bellamy and Dr. Samuel C. Bellamy. Elizabeth, a young and beautiful woman from North Carolina, met Samuel and quickly fell in love. They became engaged and relocated to Florida, where Samuel constructed a grand mansion as a wedding gift for his beloved. On May 11, 1837, the couple exchanged their vows in the mansion’s rose garden. Tragically, their wedding day would be marred by an unforeseen disaster.

During the wedding reception, Elizabeth retired to the mansion to rest, still wearing her heavy wedding gown on an oppressively hot day. While she slept, her gown caught fire from a nearby candle. Guests heard her screams as she awoke to find herself engulfed in flames. In a desperate attempt to save herself, she rushed down the staircase, her dress and hair ablaze. Despite her husband’s efforts to heal her burns, Elizabeth succumbed to her injuries a few days later. Her last words echoed the vows she had spoken during the wedding ceremony, “I will love you always and forever. Never will I leave you.”
