Most people prefer to give the Devil a wide berth. Tales of blood and terror inhabit this barren circle in the woods. From a Native American massacre to UFO landings, this spot has plenty of spine-tingling tales. Would you dare to enter the Devil’s Stamping Ground at night?

The History of the Devils Tramping Ground

According to local lore, two warring Native American tribes fought a great battle in the forest on this spot. The slaughter caused the blood to soak into the ground, cursing it so nothing ever grew there again. After losing the battle, the defeated trip escaped from the mainland area towards the Outer Banks. Later, they grew into the Croatian tribe who disappeared with the lost English colonists of Roanoke Island in the sixteenth century.

It’s also claimed that tribes brought blue clay from the coast and buried an important chief named Croatan in this ground. Out of respect, the gods prevent grass from growing there. When one visitor dug in the circle with his penknife, he turned up chalky blue clay that didn’t match the other soil in the area. When the devout Scots Irish who populated the Appalachian frontier arrived here, they brought tales of the Devil with them. Ghosts, witches, and the Devil frolicked and tricked people in the spooky spot in the heart of the Carolinas. The area is also called “the Chatham County Vortex due to a reported UFO landing there. During the Cold War, people saw a strange glow in the woods. This extraterrestrial radiation emanating from an alien spaceship killed the grass in the area. According to some stories, a “Magdalene Crystal Column of Energy” is anchored in the site.

The Haunting of the Devils Tramping Ground

There’s no question that the Devil’s Stamping Ground is a magnet for supernatural events. Even though stories about the place shifted over time, from the place where the Devil stamped in a circle, destroying the grass to alien sightings, the idea of evil has persisted in this spot. Scary stories about Native American rites and deities persist. While indigenous peoples lived in these lands, it’s likely that myths are wrapped up with guilt about dark deeds committed against Native American people. By the 1930s, visitors reported a huge shadowy creature who guarded the circle and chased dogs and hunters away. While some people still claim to feel a magical presence in the forest, most people think of the spot as a UFO landing spot. Today, the area is privately owned. It has also shrunk from an enormous circle to a space just 40 feet in diameter. Spooky fog, apparently not connected with the weather, moves through the woods during paranormal happenings.
