The Davis Hospital, built in the 1920s, played a significant role in North Carolina’s healthcare landscape. As one of the state’s early hospitals, it operated around the clock, setting a precedent for 24-hour medical care. It was also at the forefront of medical advancements, being one of the first hospitals in North Carolina to introduce air conditioning, glucose intravenous therapy, and the use of radiographoscope for x-ray film, which was invented by a local physician. The hospital was dedicated to providing comprehensive care and was known for its blood-donor services and nursing school.
Despite the founder’s death in 1955, the Davis Hospital continued to expand throughout the mid-20th century until the decision was made to construct a newer facility. With the closure of the original hospital, the building remained vacant for several years. During this period, it gained a reputation for eerie occurrences and paranormal activity, capturing the attention of those interested in the supernatural.

The old Davis Hospital, despite its demolition in 2021, had a haunted reputation during its abandoned state. Numerous reports and sightings added to the spooky lore surrounding the building. One recurring phenomenon was the sound of crying babies, often heard emanating from what used to be the pediatric ward. Visitors and witnesses claimed to have felt a malevolent presence in this area, heightening the sense of unease.
Windows and doors were said to open and close on their own, creating an unsettling atmosphere within the abandoned hospital. Witnesses described hearing screams and cries throughout the building, contributing to the haunted ambiance. However, the morgue was the epicenter of the highest paranormal activity. Even on hot days, the temperature in the morgue remained unusually cold. Numerous phantom voices and sounds were reported in this area, adding to the sense of otherworldly presence.
Disembodied voices were frequently reported, with whispers, cries, and shrieks heard echoing in the hallways. Phantom footsteps and mysterious banging noises on medical counters further added to the haunting tales associated with the old Davis Hospital. Residents living nearby also claimed to have heard doors slamming and banging on walls, despite the building being vacant.
