Unveiling the Mystery of the Grey Lady
The Grey Lady was first reported in 1937 by a night janitor who encountered her ghostly figure in the library’s basement. Believed to be the spirit of Louise Carpenter, she reportedly haunts the library due to resentment towards her father for disinheriting her. Over the years, her appearances have become a key part of the library’s lore, captivating both staff and visitors.
The 1970s brought a surge in sightings, particularly during a period of renovations. It was then that the Grey Lady’s presence was felt strongest, even purportedly following the Lead Librarian home. This period cemented her status as an enduring ghostly presence.
In 2007, paranormal experts conducted extensive investigations and confirmed the high likelihood of her presence, particularly in the library’s basement, children’s room, and other key areas where “ghost cams” have now been installed. These webcams offer live feeds for curious online viewers, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Grey Lady.
Although sightings have decreased, the last notable encounter occurred in August 2010. Despite this, the legend of the Grey Lady continues to attract attention and adds a mysterious allure to the historic Willard Library.
