In 1892, Henry C. Brown established The Brown Palace in haunted Colorado, which stands as the second-largest hotel in Denver to this day. The hotel boasts several unique features that captivate its guests. Notably, the hotel was designed in a triangular shape, a result of the city founders’ decision to lay out the streets on Capitol Hill using compass points, creating a triangular lot where the streets intersected. The architectural grandeur of The Brown Palace is truly awe-inspiring, with its original moldings and lighting. During the holiday season, the hotel becomes a sight to behold, adorned with lavish decorations, including a massive 25-square-foot chandelier adorned with 4,800 ornaments, 250,000 crystal beads, 60,000 lights, and 500 pounds of glitter. One of the hotel’s famous traditions is its daily tea time, held from noon to 4:00 p.m., featuring honey infused with Colorado’s Breckinridge bourbon, derived from bees raised on the hotel’s rooftop. The hotel’s soaps, lotions, and body scrubs also incorporate their renowned honey.
However, alongside its opulent charm, The Brown Palace is also renowned for being home to several ghostly spirits, drawing ghost hunters from around the globe. One commonly reported apparition is that of Henry C. Brown himself, who is frequently sighted pacing the hotel hallways in the early morning hours or even traversing through the walls of the Churchill Bar. In addition to Brown, there are other regular ghostly occupants of the hotel, including a bellhop who swipes newspapers from doorways, a prostitute from Denver’s frontier days, and a trio of musicians playing instruments. Room 904 has gained notoriety for its haunting activity, with guests often experiencing bone-chilling temperatures within the room. On certain nights, the front desk receives multiple calls from room 904, despite the fact that the room does not even have a telephone.
The spectral presence within The Brown Palace adds an air of mystery and intrigue to this iconic Denver landmark, leaving guests and visitors with tales of their encounters with the otherworldly.
