Nicknamed the “Ox”, the Occidental Hotel is a landmark hotel located in Buffalo, Wyoming. The property was first built in 1880 next to the Bighorn Mountains, at the foot of the Bozeman Trail. The property was a popular hangout for many notable figures, such as Teddy Rosevelt, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Butch Cassidy.

The hotel had many years of success leading up to the Great Depression when the luxury of hotel stays and trips across the country became unattainable for most. After decades of the hotel becoming more and more run down, the locale had a restored sense of faith in 1997 when Dawn Dawson bought the property and began a laborious restoration and preservation process, which would not be completed for 10 years. Today, with its original saloon ceilings and antiquated furniture, the Ox takes visitors back in time to the days of the Old West.

Some have named the Ox as the most haunted place in all of Wyoming. Guests over the years have reported disturbing instances of paranormal activity within its 140-year-old walls. The most reoccurring spirit encounter is that of a young girl named Emily, who lived in the hotel with her mother and passed away of a childhood illness. Guests have reported hearing her voice or being tapped on the shoulder or their hair being pulled. Many have also reported her wearing a white dress. Emily is a harmless spirit, however, she is only one of many that roam the halls at the Occidental Hotel. Whether you believe in paranormal activity, are curious about spirit encounters, or want to stay in a staple piece of American history, the Ox is sure to leave a memorable impression on all who brave a visit.

Stay curious, but always stay within the bounds of the law and show consideration for the spiritual and historical significance of haunted places.
