Starvation Heights Sanitarium in Haunted Washington

Haunted House in Washington State

Starvation Heights is definitely a morbid tourist attraction to say the least. This was the location for the practice of Linda Hazzard, who claimed to have found a cure for all health ailments. Hazzard called her practice “Wildernedd Heights” but due to the immense tragedy that occured there, the locals have called it “Starvation Heights”. Her self proclaimed cure included a strict diet of nothing but vegetable broth for 40 days. However, all of her patients ended up dying in her care from extreme physical deprivation and ultimately, starvation. Once her “patients” became too physically weak, Hazzard would take over their finances and their affairs. Overall, Hazzard claimed the lives of 15 victims through her “starvation cure”. In 1935, the Sanitarium caught fire, and the Hazzards did not rebuild. Though the Sanitarium cannot be seen due to the fire, Hazzard’s personal residence still stands today.

More than a century after Hazzard murdered numerous patients, their ghosts are still said to haunt the area where Starvation Heights resided. Some reports include hearing screams, scratching at the walls, and seeing ghostly figures or apparitions walking around. This clearly is not suprising with the amount of suffering that occured here. One experience reported by the family occured when they were making dinner. As they were turning away to prepare the meal, all of the chairs in the kitchen had been stacked up against the bathroom door although they seemingly had not heard it and there was no one else around when the incident occured. There have also been reports of witnessing ghostly figures sitting along the ledge in the attic, appearing frozen or unable to move. Historic report indicates that Hazzard usually housed ill patients in the attic, and many died there.

Stay curious, but always stay within the bounds of the law and show consideration for the spiritual and historical significance of haunted places.
