A farmer named John Bell lived on his land in Robertson County in Tennessee with his wife and children. They moved there in the 1800s and stayed on the farm for a total of 13 years. During this time, John became a deacon at a Baptist church called Red River.
The family moved from North Carolina, taking up home on this 320-acre plot. For 10 years they lived there peacefully, until strange things started happening. The location has actually been the inspiration for the American horror series ‘The Bell Witch’.
In 1871, the family started to report paranormal sightings around the farm. First, it began with odd-looking animals wandering about the farm at night, and knocks on their doors and walls. Other early signs were the sound of rats chewing on bedposts, chains being dragged through the house, and gulping/choking noises.
After a time, this paranormal entity developed a voice, and seemed to take on several different forms through shapeshifting. Eventually, the family made contact. This is when the entity identified itself as the witch of a neighbor, Kate Batts. From here on, the entity was known as Kate the Bell Cave Witch.
‘Kate’, tormented the family for the next 3 years, but most of her attention was put on John Bell and his daughter Betsy Bell. Her aim seemed to be to prevent Betsy from marrying her then-fiance, and to kill John.
Betsy was scratched, pinched, stabbed with pins, and pulled from her hair. John had spells of a swollen throat, and the feeling of a stick being jabbed into the side of his neck.
On the 20th of December 1820, John died from poisoning. Kate took credit for his death. One year later, Betsy broke it off with her partner. Once these two things occurred, Kate said goodbye and promised to return in 7 years time.
