Hotel Bethlehem: A Historic Landmark with Ghostly Encounters

Hotel Bethlehem, located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is a renowned historic hotel that has captivated guests with its timeless charm since its establishment in 1922. Part of the Historic Hotels of America since 2002, this iconic hotel holds a rich history dating back to the 18th century when it began as a log cabin built by Moravians. Over the years, the hotel has witnessed numerous transformations, becoming an inn and eventually evolving into the Golden Eagle Hotel in the early 1820s. Under the ownership of Charles M. Schwab, it was reconstructed and unveiled in 1922 as the esteemed Hotel Bethlehem.

The History of the Hotel:

Hotel Bethlehem’s origins trace back to the year 1741, when Moravians constructed a modest log cabin that would later become known as the First House of Bethlehem. As the Moravians actively worked towards developing the town of Bethlehem, they constructed over 50 buildings in the vicinity. The log cabin initially served as a store and later underwent renovations to become an inn. Finally, in the 1820s, it transformed into the Golden Eagle Hotel, which stood as a prominent establishment in the area for nearly a century. However, the outbreak of World War I in 1914 led to its closure in 1919.

In 1921, the hotel was purchased by Charles M. Schwab, a prominent figure in the steel industry. Schwab embarked on an ambitious project to reconstruct and expand the hotel, commissioning renowned architect Frederick J. Osterling for the task. The newly revamped hotel, retaining the name Hotel Bethlehem, was unveiled in 1922, boasting elegant architecture and luxurious amenities that would cater to a discerning clientele. Today, the hotel stands as a testament to both its rich history and timeless elegance, attracting visitors from near and far.
