Oklahoma City has long been associated with the cattle industry, so it’s no surprise that one of the most iconic haunted places in Oklahoma is a Langston’s Western Wear store, located at 2034 NW 7th Street. Located in the heart of Stockyards City, one of the world’s largest cattle markets, the two-story brick building that became a Langston’s Western Wear store was originally built in 1919 as a bar, dance hall, and hotel. For a price, tired and lonely farmers, ranchers, and cowboys could find food, fun, and maybe even female companionship. Decades later, when Langston’s needed a new flagship store, the history and the location of the building seemed perfect. Today, the store has been renovated and restored to preserve much of the original historical appearance.

But the building’s past seems to continue to manifest in the present, because the store is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of two sisters who died there – Patty and Rose, both of whom worked in the downstairs saloon as taxi dancers. For a drink and a dime, they would dance with customers. According to the legend, Patty was killed by a jealous boyfriend who thought she was doing more than just dancing with some of the men who paid her. Consumed by jealous rage, he shot her, and she died on the first-floor area that is now the women’s boots and children’s clothing sections.
Continuing the tragedy, the story goes on, Rose was so distraught over the death of her sister that she took her own life, hanging herself in an upstairs hotel room. Today, the ghosts of these two poor young women are said to roam the store as they search for each other. Among the paranormal activity are lights that turn off and on without explanation and a feeling of malevolence on the second floor. For fans of all things unexplained, it’s well worth a trip to the haunted Langston’s in OKC. You can see a beautiful historic building, buy some boots or a buckle, and if you’re lucky, bar witness as the sisters who were so close in life try to find each other in death.
