The History of La Purisima Mission
La Purisima Mission, officially known as the Mission La Purísima Concepción De María Santísima, which translates to the “Mission of the Immaculate Conception of Most Holy Mary”, has quite a rich history. It was founded by Spanish Franciscan missionary Presidente Fermín Lasuén on December 8, 1787 in what is now Lompoc, California as the 11th of 21 Franciscan missions built in California during the late 18th century.
Unfortunately, the original mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812 and, by 1813, a new site was chosen and the mission was rebuilt. This new site became the most extensively developed with the most fully equipped workshops and the largest herds, flocks, gardens and fields, making it one of the most prosperous missions.
Closure occurred in 1845 in the period of secularization – when lands were distributed to local settlers after Mexican government ended church control of missions. The structures fell into ruin in the following decades.
However, La Purisima Mission saw a new life in the 20th century. In 1933, it was acquired by the State of California and the Civilian Conservation Corps pledged to restore it. By 1941, it was fully restored to its historic 1820s appearance and opened as a State Historic Park. Today, it serves as a cultural and historical landmark where visitors can learn about California‘s mission period and history. It is the only example in California of a complete mission complex.
Is it really haunted at La Purisima Mission?
La Purisima Mission, also known as Mission La Purísima Concepción, has a reputation for being one of the most haunted places in California due to the numerous reports of paranormal activities. This is perhaps not surprising considering the mission’s rich and turbulent history which dates back to its founding in 1787.
One of the most common reports is of strange noises and voices, often thought to be Spanish priests singing hymns or chanting prayers. Others have reported hearing the sound of horses and livestock, tools clanging, or even the noise of heavy doors opening and closing, despite there being no one around to make these noises.
Additionally, visitors and staff have claimed to see apparitions. As per their reports, the most common is of a woman in a white dress in the mission’s church. Perhaps even more disturbingly, there are also stories of the ghost of a young boy who is often seen in the areas that once served as living quarters for the Chumash Indians who built and worked at the mission.
It’s also worthwhile to note that paranormal investigators have visited La Purisima Mission many times, often citing that they feel a heavy presence. Some have claimed to have documented unexplained cold spots, orbs in photos, and inexplicable electrical malfunctions with their equipment.
However, while these tales are indeed intriguing, it’s important to remember that they are largely anecdotal. The experiences of the paranormal are highly subjective and can be influenced by many factors such as suggestion, expectation, and even one’s psychological state at the time. No definitive scientific proof has been provided to confirm the existence of ghosts or paranormal activity. Therefore, whether or not La Purisima Mission is truly haunted comes down to personal belief and interpretation of the events.
Wrapping Up
La Purisima Mission, located in present-day Lompoc, California, was founded by Spanish Franciscan missionaries in 1787. It was originally built to convert the local Native American populations to Catholicism and is one of the 21 missions established in California during the Spanish Colonial era.
The mission has a fascinating but lurid history, as it endured numerous hardships including a devastating earthquake in 1812 which required substantial rebuilding efforts. The relocated mission was designed in a more efficient layout resulting in a large, self-contained complex which included workshops, housing, and farmland. However, by the mid-19th century, the mission gradually fell into decay after being secularized in 1834.
This rich history is believed to be the root cause of the alleged paranormal activities at this historical site. Visitors, employees, and paranormal investigators have reported a plethora of eerie occurrences, such as apparitions of both Native Americans and Spanish missionaries, unexplained noises, and even the ghost of a woman believed to be left heartbroken by a Spanish soldier.
Another pervasive rumor is about the ghost of a horse, which is said to gallop around the property. Investigators also reported sudden changes in temperature and hearing whispering and footsteps when no one else was present.
Aside from these supernatural stories, the mission is a significant archaeological site. Today, it is recognized as a State Historic Park and allows visitors to step back in time to explore California‘s multicultural history. The site is preserved in its original form, showcasing authentic artifacts and offering interactive exhibits and tours related to the mission’s history.
