Historic Ramsey House, located just outside Knoxville, was once known as the finest home in Tennessee. Today, it’s known as one of the most haunted locations in Tennessee.

The home was built in 1797 by Thomas Hope, Knoxville’s first home builder. It was built for Colonel Francis Alexander Ramsey, who would later to become one of the founders of University of Tennessee. Colonel Ramsey’s son William grew to be the first elected Mayor of Knoxville and Secretary of State for Tennessee.The Ramsey house was built out of Tennessee pink marble and blue limestone, and it was well known for its unique interior and exterior architectural features. As one of the first homes built in Tennessee, it was regarded as the finest home in the state. The Ramsey family was a prominent one in the Knoxville area, and the home hosted many visitors and social events.

The Ramsey House stood empty for many years before being rescued and restored by a historical society in 1952. When the home was empty, people would often spend the night there. They reported hearing choirs and other religious music and seeing a hearse drawn by four horses circling the house.The home is now a historical site, and the staff have reported seeing several ghosts repeatedly. One is young William, who reportedly taps staff and visitors on the arm. Colonel Ramsey’s other sons, Reynolds and Seth, have been reported to curse at staff. And a tall, thin woman with a bun, who is thought to be Colonel Ramsey’s second wife, has been seen walking the grounds. Ramsey House is a haunted historical location that you can visit. In fact, the site holds guided spirit tours during Halloween season. You could perhaps see one of the boys, Ramsey’s second wife, or maybe even Colonel Ramsey himself.
